Contextual Statement

I missed out on class for this assignment, I managed to read the brief in my own time. I read it so many times, for me to understand what the brief is asking me to do. Talking to some of my class mates really helped me.

When i thought about the area that we were given, Building One was the first thought that came to mind. I love watching horror movies and hearing any story that relate to ghost. Listening to stories from friends about building one and knowing what it used to be before it became a institution. I knew what i wanted to do right away. At first i thought about re-acting the past by having nurses wearing their creepy gowns and standing in front of the massive building. I also thought about taking many photographs of a friend in a old nurse uniform, with the camera in one spot and her in different places. I was thinking of photo-shopping it all into one photo.

I did my research on building one in the building one library. After finding out how patients were treated I had to think over my plan. The word re-acting really got me thinking about the history of building one. My mind was set on the patients and how badly they were treated.

At this point i decided to look at the building itself. Building one is a big building and anywhere you are in the building, you know that something bad or good happened there. I explored building one by myself, even though i was super scared. I had to experience walking all around building one alone. While I was exploring the building, i took photos of specific places that give me the creeps. The photos turned out really good and I was proud to say that I walked around building one alone and didn’t have a heart attack.

My research on artists that takes photographs of old buildings ended with Christian Richter. Christian adored taking photos of decaying architecture, the patterns and textures, It reminded him that everything is impermanent.

Looking at my work and Christian’s work, the difference between our work is that he takes images of abandon buildings. My images are photographs of a very old building which is still in use to this day.
