Big Change In Education
I moved to New Zealand with my younger sister and we stayed with our aunt and her family. I started school at Acorn Academy, a small private school at Glen Eden. Acorn Academy was very different from the schools we had back in the islands.
First thing I noticed while I was there, was that badly behaved students never get smacks. The teachers will just tell them off. As for someone who was bought up in the islands, getting told off was not something new but not getting hit by a thirty centimeter ruler was very new. The language was obviously one of the big changes that happened to me.
While I was finally getting used to Acorn Academy, my aunt told me that I need to move schools. As I started at Waitakere College, I noticed the a big difference. The atmosphere was different. As a new student, it was frightening. Coming from a small private school to a massive school was a big change. I saw student’s attitude towards teachers were very different from what we had in the islands. Talking back to the teachers and making teachers cry were all new to me. I learned a lot from these big changes.
Something Negative That Happened To Me
The English language is a difficult language to learn. I came to New Zealand with little knowledge of the English language. I was always the shy kid that sits at the back of the class, always by myself. I never talked to anyone knowing that my English is not good. I always have the thought of people laughing at me when I speak English
Watching TV was my way of learning English and it helped. Reading was also one of the ways that helped me through my journey of learning English. It wasn’t my favorite way of learning but I was told that it helps. I learned a lot of new words but I still had the fear of people laughing at me.
One day, I shared my fear to one of my close Tuvaluan friends who grew up in New Zealand. She then told me to not be ashamed because it’s not my language. From that day on, I changed the way I think of myself. It gave me a little confidence to speak English. My Tuvaluan friends started talking to me in English to help me with my fear. I started talking to students in my classes and learned a lot of new words and also made new friends.
