The Boring Signs

I have chosen photography as my contemporary art form for this project, specifically focusing on street photography. The idea was to walk around the streets and take photos of whatever caught my eye. I decided to walk through the busiest street near where I live. The street can be quite boring sometimes, it is what I see every day whenever I walk through this road. Then I noticed every time I walk through this street; I always see the same signs. The shop signs, the street signs, and the board signs on the sidewalk. I found interest in these boring signs I see every day and decided to photograph them.
Throughout my research, I came across a lot of street photographers. One of the artists who I found interest in is Elliot Erwitt. He is an American street photographer who captures life on the streets of New York and around the world. He is well known for ironic and humorous street photographs.

Lee Friedland is a well-known street photographer who captured the social landscape of cities. He photographs people and their urban environment. His subjects include storefronts, urban frames, and signage. Lee Friedland’s work is widely known for transforming visual understanding of contemporary American culture, “passionately embracing all subject matters”. I have seen that I took similar photographs to his work called Sign. The way he captured his photographs is how I want my images to be. The concept may be different but how the photographs display is what I am looking for.

I am planning on changing the locations of where I will have my photoshoots, walking through streets I am not familiar with and photographing as many signs I come across. My research has only been focusing on photographers, I plan to do more research on other practitioners that relates to streets and signs.
